Access to course expires 1 year following purchase. Please make sure you complete prior to expiry.
Webinar Synopsis:
Over 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another form dementia. The global picture is sobering with over 44 million people living with dementia, which is more than the entire population of Canada. This is a health crisis. How is this connected with oral health? A surprising new etiologic pathway has emerged and that is the presence of periodontal disease. Well known periodontal pathogens, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, have been identified as a strong culprit involved with neurodegenerative changes in the brain. The prevalence of this fatal disease and its devastating impact on lives only strengthens the urgency of finding ways to fight a disease which presently has no cure. Periodontal disease is treatable; and we are ideally positioned as dental hygienists to raise awareness, educate, and promote evidence-based therapeutic interventions to sustain oral health and mitigate risk of systemic disease.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of the webinar, the participant will be able to;
- Discuss the significant incidence of Alzheimer’s and population trends in Canada.
- Understand the biological pathway in which periodontal pathogens can exacerbate degenerative changes in the brain.
- Identify the role of the dental hygienist in promoting importance of oral health and advocacy for overall health.
