NEW to ODHA online learning – Caries and Fluoride, sponsored by Colgate and presented by Marti Santizo, RDH, MBA. This lecture will provide a scientific framework for rethinking our approach to managing dental caries as a disease. It is preventable, yet it continues to be the most common chronic disease in children. The session will challenge dental professionals to shift from “restoration” to “prevention” based on the best available evidence, knowledge and tools. Managing the at-risk caries-prone client requires a multifaceted approach involving caries risk assessment, in-office treatment, education and self-care. Clinicians will learn how fluoride therapies, including silver diamine fluoride, play an important role in the prevention and management of dental decay. An overview of caries development, the incidence and prevalence of decay in various populations, and caries risk assessment will be provided.
- Describe the caries development process and appropriate intervention strategies.
- Use data from caries risk assessment techniques to determine client caries risk level.
- Apply evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for client fluoride therapies.
- Develop and implement an effective in-office fluoride treatment protocol, based on client risk for caries development.
